The funds raised from this year’s festival will be donated to Care for Real and Catholic Charities. Care For Real is a food pantry and food delivery service to the homebound that is located in Edgewater.
In August 2013 Care for Real fed 5,232 people – an all-time record in its 43 years of existence. Despite government reports of improving economic trends, more and more people are turning to Care For Real and similar sources for assistance. With the pending cuts in federal food stamp programs, food pantries are preparing to feed more people.
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago has provided over 20 million meals through its community nutrition programs, including Senior Mother and Child Nutrition Program (SMCNP) food packages, Women Infants and Children (WIC) food coupons, Summer Food and school year programs, meals at senior centers, and home-delivered meals for seniors. Catholic Charities’ food pantries and food and nutrition programs provide an essential service to individuals and families with the most immediate of needs. Catholic Charities used to feed 51,000 people annually. Now they feed 51,000 quarterly.
