Fiery, Flexible, Free Form

The Nick Mazzarella Trio perform in front of jazz inspired art by Ben Salus. They will play at Constellation on 3/8.

Here’s a complete performance and venue schedule for the entire Festival.

Illinois native Nick Mazzarella burst onto the scene with the fiery, flexible, free form jazz trio that he brought to the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2013. On Saturday, 3/8, at Constellation, Nick and his trio will donate their considerable artistry to the Chi-Town Jazz Festival. There is no missing the influence of Ornette Coleman on this group. In addition, Nick has developed an interest in the intense spirituality of John Coltrane adding a rich new facet to his sound. When joined by bassist Anton Hatwich and drummer Frank Rosaly, the young saxophonist achieves an infectious buoyancy and vitality that’s hard to resist, full of energy, confidence, and optimism. As the great jazz critic Larry Kart has written, “He has that satisfying union of warmth/heat and continuous, logical melodic/rhythmic thought that goes right back to the beginnings of this music.” We are looking forward to this trio’s free form jazz performance at Constellation.
